Update 10/30/2019 - Purchased 01/26/2016
Had this almost 4 years now, daily use, usually multiple times a day. Still going strong, no other complaints or issues.
Quick Review:
Great value for pour over coffee, no plastic in boiling water. Buy it!
Longer Review:
I use this kettle every morning to make my coffee and multiple times a day for making tea. I used to use a tea kettle on my stove, fill it up with water, turn the stove on and wait forever while it came to a boil. Inevitably I would get bored of standing there waiting for it to boil, and walk away. I would then proceed to forget about said water on the stove coming to a boil until I heard the unmistakable sound of water boiling over onto a hot burner. Sometimes I would be in the middle of something and not be able to go and rescue the tea kettle for some minutes, resulting in a large amount of my water having disappeared. The auto shut-off feature is quite nice. I love being able to start water boiling and then walk away to take a shower or whatever without any consequences if I forget about the water I just put on. The swan neck is wonderful as it controls the amount of water that comes out, which an essential thing when one wants to be precise with their pour-over coffee. It boils a full pot in just under 5 minutes. I have used many different electric kettles, most of which have some kind of plastic in contact with the water, I really like the fact that even when the pot is full, the water is only in contact with stainless steel. I have used it multiple times every day for about a month now with absolutely no real problems or complaints. I highly recommend this kettle.
Some things that I have noticed.
1) Without fail, after boiling water, there is a puddle left on the base. This is from steam forming condensation in the dome, and running down through the handle, out two little holes in the bottom and onto the base. This is not a big deal. I have seen other reviews complaining about this. I have never had the puddle grow so large that it flowed off of the base during a cycle. Seriously, after you boil the water, take a towel and dry it up, or leave it. This doesn't bother me in the least bit, maybe it bothers you.
2) Scale - I have rather hard water, one of the downsides to having your water pumped straight out of the ground with only a sediment filter. I have never used a water pot that didn't accumulate scale on the bottom. If you use a pot or tea kettle, they do the same thing if you never wash them. Scale doesn't bother me either, although, if left long enough it can affect the performance of the kettle even killing it. Once a month I boil a cycle of water with vinegar in it. I don't measure, just kind of dump some in. At the end of the cycle, the bottom of the kettle is clear of vinegar. No problem.
3) Rust - My kettle has no rust whatsoever. I can only guess those getting rust must have a high iron content in their water. I use mine multiple times every single day, so it is getting wet quite a bit, but still no rust.
4) Size - The kettle is advertised as a 1.0L kettle. If this is to small for you, don't buy it. There is no reason to leave a bad review claiming that it is to small just because you have no idea what 1.0L looks like. You have spatial problems, its ok. Take a 2L bottle of soda, empty half of it out, you now have 1.0L. If that is not enough for you, buy a bigger kettle. Problem solved.
Just this morning, I made a Chemex pot of some freshly roasted Guatemalan Finca la Providencia (Taraccino Coffee in Minneapolis... cool place to get some great coffee), and with the Bonavita, a steady stream of water was EASY to do. And the result was an incredible brewed coffee. Though the flavor profile has much to do with the brewing method, that brewing method is greatly affected by the pour. The Guat has never had the depth it did this morning. Amazing cup that really did surprise me. The body rivaled that of my vac-pot brewer. I'm a convert to this style of pouring spout. Really makes the slow-pour that much easier to do, and control.
Now for another important aspect of this kettle - the actual heating of the water. Quick! 30 ounces of water took maybe four minutes. While there isn't a whistle like on the tea kettle, boiling water makes a very recognizable sound. First it gets louder and louder, then quieter as it goes to a true boil. Then, the kettle's heater automatically turns off. I listen, and have gotten quite good at knowing when to start my grinder so that it finishes right before the water is ready to pour.
Finally, the quality of the kettle is quite satisfactory. Nice materials and good build-quality. My guess is that I will be using this kettle for years to come.
UPDATE: 10/18/2013
After almost two years of use, I'm still quite happy with this kettle. I use it 5-7 days per week (weekends quite often mean more time in the morning, so I fire up the lever-espresso machine for cappuccinos, etc.), and it's still going as it did on day one. Not the speediest to heat water, but while it's heating, I do other things, and just stay within earshot (water gives off a good amount of sound as it's coming to a boil, then gets quiet right as it's reaching a boil).
My only addition to my review would be that I wish the flow of water were a bit more restricted (slower). I can slowly pour, but the opening size is just a bit larger than I'd prefer. No big deal though... I've gotten to be a proficient pourer, and have adopted a pulsing-pour style (pour a bit, stop, pour a bit more, and so on). Also, the hard-water we have here in Southern California has left some very-slight hard-water film on the inside of the kettle. I've been meaning to boil up some water then dump some Cafiza in to the water (post boil). With that sitting in there for 10 minutes or so, the deposits will all be gone.
So the bottom line question is if I'd buy this kettle again. Yup. In fact, I did. I bought a spare early on just in case mine ever died. Nothing lasts forever, and I'm glad I've got a back-up for when I need it - though I don't anticipate needing it for a LONG time.
